Minecraft is now available for Nintendo Switch 2 with enhanced lighting, dynamic shadows and other visual improvements. Nintendo confirmed that digital owners of the original Switch version can claim the Switch 2 Standard Edition upgrade for free.

The details were shared in Nintendo’s October 27 announcement, which also explains how existing players can transfer their worlds and what comes with each edition.

Vibrant Visuals brings a new look

The Switch 2 version includes Minecraft’s Vibrant Visuals improvements, including directional lighting, volumetric fog and dynamic shadows. Supported Marketplace content and the Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack can also benefit from the upgraded visuals.

There are a few limitations: Vibrant Visuals does not work in split-screen play or in certain Marketplace worlds and content. Players can still explore, build and survive using the familiar core game.

How the free upgrade works

If you already own a digital copy of Minecraft for the original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo says you can upgrade to the Switch 2 digital Standard Edition for free through Nintendo eShop. The free upgrade is not described as applying to owners of the original physical cartridge.

Both physical and digital owners can receive a discounted offer for the Switch 2 Ultimate Collection by launching their original Switch copy on Switch 2 during the promotional window, from October 27, 2026 at 9 a.m. Pacific to January 31, 2027 at 9 a.m. Pacific.

Nintendo also confirms existing Switch worlds can be carried over to Switch 2, so longtime builders do not need to abandon earlier creations.

Editions and prices

The Standard Edition costs $29.99 in the US. The $39.99 Deluxe Collection adds cosmetic content and 700 Minecoins. The $49.99 Ultimate Collection includes additional Minecoins and other extras. Those are regular prices listed by Nintendo and can vary by region.

For returning players, world transfers and the free digital upgrade are the big benefits. Newcomers can start with the Standard Edition, while existing owners should check Nintendo eShop before buying another copy.
