Rockstar Games has confirmed when players can start downloading Grand Theft Auto VI ahead of its November 19, 2026 launch. Digital pre-loading opens on November 10 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, although the start times differ between consoles. Rockstar also says the download can require up to 212 GB of available storage, depending on the device.

For anyone planning to play at launch, the biggest job right now is less glamorous than a getaway in Vice City: making room on the drive.

GTA 6 pre-load times for PS5 and Xbox

According to Rockstar’s updated November 3 pre-load FAQ, PlayStation 5 digital pre-loading begins at midnight local time on November 10. Xbox Series X|S uses one global opening time: 12 a.m. GMT on November 10. Those are not interchangeable time zones, so Xbox owners should check what the GMT start means in their region.

Rockstar describes this as digital pre-loading for people who have pre-ordered the game. Downloading the files early does not change the November 19 release date or grant early access.

How much storage space does GTA 6 need?

Rockstar’s guidance is to leave room for a pre-load of up to 212 GB. That is a substantial amount of free space, especially on consoles with other large games installed. Rather than treating that figure as an identical final install size for every system, use it as the publisher’s upper-end preparation guidance.

On PS5, check console storage before November 10 and decide whether older games need to be moved or deleted. On Xbox, do the same on the drive that will hold the game. If you use expanded storage, make sure your setup supports the game you intend to launch.

Check automatic downloads before the window opens

Rockstar’s support page says PS5 owners need auto-downloads enabled and the console switched on or in Rest Mode for automatic pre-loading. Xbox owners need automatic updates enabled and their console switched on or in Sleep mode. The FAQ links directly to PlayStation’s pre-order download help and Xbox’s pre-order guidance for console-specific setup.

Sony’s November 3 PlayStation Blog announcement also recommends checking account access and storage before pre-loading starts.

What about boxed copies and release day?

Rockstar’s latest Newswire announcement says code-in-box editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are expected at retailers beginning November 12. That is a separate detail from the November 10 digital pre-load window. Buyers of physical or retail-code editions should follow the instructions for their particular copy instead of assuming every edition unlocks an identical pre-load process.

The main date has not moved: Grand Theft Auto VI releases on November 19, 2026. If your digital pre-order is in place, checking the download settings and reserving storage now should help keep launch day about playing rather than waiting through a huge download.
